Not all DVD drives can read PC-Recordable , Dual Layer disks. Commercial, dual layer dvd's like the retail boxed set contains,
are not recorded on the same type of media as the PC-Recordable Dual Layer disks.
Dual Layer DVD's (for PC's) use two different DYE layers and the reflectivity between those layers is lower
than the reflectivity of commercial DVD's. A lot of older DVD-ROM/DVD-R/W (PC) drives have problems reading the PC recordable
Dual Layer disks. I have seen notices on the packages of Dual Layer disks, stating that older PC (and even some home DVD
players) may not be able to read the disks.
I have encountered this problem myself. I can record a Dual Layer DVD on my newer PC with a Dual Layer recorder in it and it
will work fine in several other pc's. But, on an older system I have with just a DVD-ROM drive in it, it would not read it.
Tried the boxed DVD's from a friend, and they read just fine in the same PC. And my PC-recorded Dual Layer DVD read just fine in
his system. So, the problem is more likely to be a drive that does not have a powerful enough laser in it to read the different
dye layers easily.
