I've made a little progress. Gimp had the same problem until I specified a
PPD in the PPD field in Gimp's printer setup dialog. Once I did that, it
worked fine. I'm assuming that when a job is being sent to the printer
from Firefox, it needs to access a PPD which for some reason is not
accessed. Is access to the PPD configured somewhere? If so, where? I've
looked at the PPD's in the /etc/cups/PPD directory and they seem to be
properly composed -- they reference the same PPD driver as I specified in
setting up the printer -- and, it works fine in KDE. Is there somewhere
else that is misconfigured?
As for the hanging parallel port, this can be solved by killing the
process called parallel. After that, you can access the printer easily.
