Mandee,

I hope this isn't how you deal with everything that doesn't work for you the
first time. Most people start with something like "I'm trying this and
it's not working for me. Can someone help?" Most places I frequent would
have ripped you to shreds or filtered you out as a troll for 3 reasons:

1. Most people don't have nearly as many problems as you have described.
Sounds more like a setup for a troll posting than actual experience.

2. Most people are more focused on fixing things than taking cheap shots.

3. Most people are nicer about the whole thing.

Fortunately, this is a more forgiving group than most.

I am running 9.3 on an AMD 2500+ w/nVidia graphics and am not having any of
the issues you describe. My only issue is with a card reader that isn't
working, but between me and Google, I'll have it working tonight, or know
what I have to do to get it working. Before yesterday, I was running 9.2
with the same level of satisfaction.

With that said, if you really are having that many issues, then there is
something wrong, and it's not all SuSE. If it was, there'd be more people
like you than people like me (happy users). If you don't have the patience
or inclination to work through this, then find a geek who would look at it
as a challenge to show you that SuSE isn't the piece of crap you've
described.

First thing you should do is turn off hyperthreading as others have
mentioned. Besides possibly being a cause for instability, it has recently
been shown to be a security risk. This goes double if you're going to run
Windows on the box.

Secondly, check in yast, and see if DMA is on for your hard drive (you'll
find it under Hardware). If it's not, turn it on. If that is off, you'll
really see things slow down. Since Knoppix is running out of memory, it
wouldn't be affected by it.

I have set up another PC like mine with XP (for my wife - I haven't
converted her yet, still working on it), and there was a lot more work
involved getting everything to work than with Linux. Different hardware
will obviously give different results, but the answers are out there, and
it's well worth the effort. Not only will you have an OS that is stable,
functional, and easy on the eyes, you may also learn something.

There was a lot of info missing from your first post, such as the make/model
of your PC (if it's built from parts, what parts) and the model of your
graphic card, which version of nVidia drivers you installed (different
drivers have issues with different cards).

I'm not just trying to take you task, I'm willing to help you work this out.

Reply with more details about your hardware, turn off hyperthreading and
check the DMA on your hard drive.

If you really have no interest in making this work, but only wanted to vent,
then I'd be willing to take your copy of 9.3 off your hands. It should be
somewhere that it is wanted and appreciated. :-)

If you'll excuse me, I've got a card reader to fix. :-)

John
