You should not have to unless you are running Mr Jones' applications, setup,
and configuration. And I would doubt even then. No one else seems to be
reporting problems with hyperthreading: on the contrary.

I have been running various versions of Linux since mid 1998 and have never
had to disable anything. I have been running SMP kernels since early 2000
and have never had any problems with that either. I have been running dual
hyperthreaded Xeon processors (i.e., 4 virtual processors) since Early March
2004 and never had any problems with hyperthreading.

Some problems I have heard seem to be defective hardware, or improper
configuration, or just plain misunderstanding. I have no idea what Mr.
Jones' problems are. But since all distributions use pretty much the same
kernel, if there were problems with hyperthreading, no one would be getting
it to work. I started using hyperthreading with kernel-smp-2.4.21-4.EL from
Red Hat and it was fine. Currently running kernel-smp-2.4.21-27.0.4.EL. Many
users are now using 2.6 kernels and they should have even fewer problems.
