Would it be possible for you to suggest how I could do that? I know how to
use cp, but I haven't used rsync.

This may sound lame, but what is the difference between the two?

Agreed. The only reason for me to ask for a gui is because I am not
familiar with this scripting stuff yet, and for the moment, GUI seemed
more convenient. Later, however, I am willing to learn more about CLI.

I agree, I need to consider backing up several important directories.
But for the moment, I am not worried about that part as much as I am about
my documents. This may sound totally stupid, but it is always possible to
make a fresh installation of the OS or there is other ways to recover it,
but for me it would be disasterous if I loose my docs. <take my coat and
hat and am ready to leave!!>
It (making a copy, that is) is almost what I want. But I want it to do it
automatically (or whenever I want it), and sync those copies (or backups)
with the original files in the source directory, if there are files
that are modified. Am I asking for something unreasonable or can this be
done? You may ask why I don't just copy the files that I modified to the
backup directory. Well, I wouldn't possibly give a rational answer for
that. Except, again, maybe "for convenience" would be my answer. Instead
of selecting different files from different directories and copying them
to different directories, single click (or a command) seems an easier way.
I might be wrong of course!
After reading what you have referred to earlier, however, I will
definetely use backerupper at some point in the very near future.

For me, it is not very important since i don't mind whether it is
compressed or not, if it is done purely for reducing the size. Moreover,
most of the files I work with don't take that much space considering they
are text documents with some tables and figres. Also, I have enough hdd
space.
