9.3 and mplayer compile problems

I have a near fresh install of Suse 9.3 and am trying to compile
MPlayer-1.0pre7

I just installed gtk1-compat-devel to get past the GTK problem and I now get
past the
./configure --enable-gui --prefix=/usr

step. running make gives me the following error message:

Gui/libgui.a(about.o)(.text+0x322): In function `create_About':
about.c: undefined reference to `GTK_TEXT'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [mplayer] Error 1

I have no idea as to how to fix this so any suggestions would be helpful.
Googling did not turn up anything of use.
