I have an aged athlon 1200, with an asus7700 graphics card and ensonic sound
card.
Recently, I up dated to suse 9.3 and have/had the following problems:
1) macromedia flash plugin from suse caused over 70% CPU usage (in top)
whilst on the linuxtoday website using fire-fox. This slowed the computer
to a crawl. I solved this problem by getting the plugins from the
macromedia website. Although they have the same version number, they run at
under 10% CPU usage. Have suse meddled with them?
2) Similar problem with the nv driver in xorg. Try compiling something and
using the computer for anything else at the same time was like going back
to win3.1: the nvidia drivers solved this one!
3) The latest timidity is a no go. As a server used with vkeybd the time to
hear a note is almost one second after pressing it. As a player the CPU
usage reaches almost 100% within 30 secs. I know that there are a few
comments about the server slowness on the timidity forum but this could
cause problems for the unaware.
4) Jack refused to work. Had to recompile to get it going. Likewise ardour
seg faulted. A recompile solved this.
Hope these notes help somebody else with similar problems. Not all of us
have the latest 3+ GHz machines etc.
I almost get the impression that we will eventually need several versions of
suse linux optimised for different configurations as some of the above may
have been due to optimization for i686 machines.
