Seems strange to me. While no standard is totally standard,
USB is reasonably standardized. And while some linux kernels
had difficulty recognizing a new USB plug-in a while back
that all seems to be fixed now.

Does linux recognize the USB plug-in at all?

Mine's a different brand and does the same thing. There is a
way to turn it off but the UPS is ancient and the documentation
has long since gone the way of all documentation...
