Don't let SuSE control the DSL modem for you and don't install any
software that Verizon may give you. Just attach the modem to a router
and connect everything else to the router - then there is nothing
special to do. That is the best way for a number of reasons. Sometimes
the modem they give you will include a router so there may be nothing
else to buy.

You MIGHT need to set up networking manually, briefly, to reach the
router (or modem) through a web browser to configure it with your
account settings. That in turn may take you to a special web site to
activate your account. Sometimes, some of these have IE only interfaces
- but I think those issues are mostly resolved by now. If not, you may
need to use another computer to activate your account (or call the
service number). After that everything should run like a charm.

I never install their troublesome, bloated, resource-hogging spy and
phone home software to set up the accounts and "configure everything for
you" no matter what operating system I use. And the NAT services built
into your router make the best, fool-proof, hardware firewall you should
probably need. That leaves malicious-logic software "attacks" limited
to "pull" options (you have to go and get them to bring them home).
