You have a configuration problem.
In your X configuration file, it's very important to specify the correct
refresh rates etc for a lot of LCDs.The supported combinations of
resolution and refresh rate should be listed in your monitor's manual.
To get my new 17" Proview 780 working correctly at 1280x1024, I had to
specify the horizontal and vertical refresh rates in my XFree86 config
file.
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 60-70
VertRefresh 60
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
