I would agree with you. In the programs I write for modems (and TAs) I
always start with the appropriate &F. As an asside &F on it's own
works on many modems, but obviously check first.

I don't know whether differend initialisation strings are set,
depending upon the modem type. I know there are quite a few websites
which give lists of 'the correct initialisation string' for different
modems. I always have to plough through the manuals, as we usually
use modems (and TAs) in a non standard way. It's suprising how
different the AT command set is, for different modems. The common
command set is surprisingly small.

I'm currently re-reading the modem HOWTO, as it's a couple of years
since I last read it.
Re-reading the PCMCIA HOWTO has already helped me solve a problem I
was having with a PCMCIA serial adaptor.

I have always avoided Winmodems, one, because I always have a few
external ones floating about, and two, because they seem more trouble
than they are worth.
