I'd recommend looking at a Live CD like Knoppix first. If you can get
Knoppix to boot, then you'll be able (most likely) to get some Linux
distros installed - if not, then you're probably up the creek. Knoppix
will boot and run from the CD without any installation needed. It can also
be installed later with an included installation script. If you have
problems initially, there are several 'help' screens with useful
suggestions on how to boot with difficult setups.
No, it is not necessary to have a separate drive for a dual boot.
