Is anybody actually using the combination of
Suse (9.2)
Kmail
IMAP on a local machine
(and collecting pop3 mail from non-imap ISP)
If so it would be great to compare notes!
The reason for asking the specific question is that I have spent some
time trying to set up imap on a local machine here, and with some
helpful discussions here, have progressed to the point where one email
client works (thunderbird) and one does not (kmail).
The bad news is that I really want a user to be using kmail not
thunderbird, since kmail is integrated nicely into kde Kontact. :-(
a) the *problem* is that kmail is unable to connect or sign on to the
imap host. Sad because these tests are being actually run on the host
machine, although the same thing happens from another PC across the lan.
Error messages all relate to authentication problems at the imap server.
b) fetchmail gets pop3 mail ok from the isp, puts it in
/var/spool/mail/user1
c) yast reports the imap 'package' is installed - IMAP4, pop2, and
pop3 mail server - version 2004a-3 - vendor suse linux.
d) the imap server on /usr/sbin/imapd is enabled for the service/s imap
(and imaps).
e) an account locally on thunderbird can collect imap ok :-)
(TB was informed of the /var/spool/mail/user1 directory).
f) thunderbird successfully runs accounts concurrently collecting pop3
mail from the isp and also the local imap server (which is fed mail via
fetchmail).
g) a telnet session seems to connect to the local host (see detail below)
Conclusions so far - kmail (kde 3.3, kontact - includes kmail) with
online updates from suse seems to be trying to collect in a way causing
problems. I have wondered if security levels have been increased for
kmail here. I see that already installed is
cyrus-sasl (version 2.1.19 -7.2) and
cyrus-sasl-saslauthd (version 2.1.19 -5).
This seems to be the authentication apps only, not the cyrus IMAP server
itself. The suse IMAP server is the default offering.
