I can only speak for myself.

For me, it is not a "trendy idea."

I do not want a software company to tell me what I am allowed to do or
not allowed to do on my own personal computer, which I need to make a
living.

I simply want to decide over my own working tools.

People should not accept Product Activation and other restrictions
which take away user control. Software with Product Activation should
be rejected without fail, and software that gives the user back the
control over his or her machine should be chosen instead.
