Another use I found for this feature was where we had a main server and
a backup server, the latter running periodic rsyncs of all the user home
directories on the main server. Sometimes users might accidentally
delete a file, so the client thought it would be useful to give them
read-only access to the copies of their directories on the backup
server, so they could retrieve the file if they were quick, without us
having to call up the central operators to ask for the file to be
retrieved off tape.
These directories were inside a no-access /mirror directory to block
write access by users (since all their file ownerships and permission
were preserved), but it was easy enough to export them and mount them
read-only in another location.
