apt-get upgrade kills linux bootup

I'm using SuSE 9.1 Pro. After performing a YOU I lost scanner function
(using printer port and libieee1284) and browser access slowed down. YOU
installed patches for 2.6.5-7-193. Apparently sane/xsane had problems with
gtk. So I tried using apt-get to upgrade the gtk/gtk2 hoping that would
help. Unfortunately I got errors for gnome2 but no upgrade, and tried to
use Yast to install more of the gtk/gtk2 and Gnome packages. That only
broke a few more things.

So then I used apt-get upgrade again and it completed successfully. But
then almost every stopped working correctly, especially anything that had
anything to do with gtk. I mean I lost firefox, konqueror and darn near
everything else. I noticed that I KDE 3.2.1 was upgraded to KDE 3.4.2.
Thinking that I had to reboot for all the changes to sort themselves out I
get three errors at the login screeen (which previously was set to
automatic login). Those errors were:
kernel: cannot find map file
kernel: cannot build symbol table
kernel: end request I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

Then I couldn't get KDE running as the signon screen kept coming up and I
noticed WindowMaker as an option. WindowMaker did seem to work and I could
run a few more programs with it like firefox but not konqueror.

I tried fixing the problem with the SuSE DVD Installation Repair program.
Then I ended up booting (boot from Hard Drive) in text mode which quit at
the loading Reiserfs at hde6. [God only knows why my one and only HD was
set up as hde instead of hda originally but it worked so I left it that way
running fine for 9 months.)

My next stupid step was to use Reiserfsck to repair things which did
nothing. So I used the Install Update option and downgraded to the
original 2.6.4-52. I still got the halting at looking for hde6 /, but I
found that if I used the DVD intallation and the boot existing Linux on HD
I got the sign on screen and did get into KDE once again. The scanner
still didn't work and now I lost my floppy drive access. It doesn't show
up under devices on konqueror but it is still listed in fstab and shows up
on the /media directory. It is also listed in Webadmin but showing as not
available. I can't get Webadmin to turn it on as it comes up with a "not a
block device" error. I also noticed that /boot did not have an initrd file
which I corrected with the mkinitrd command. I also somewhere along the
line got the System.map file which was missing back.

What is missing from the /boot directory that keeps it from booting
properly. I suspect it might have something to do with vmlinuz but I am
not sure. Any hints on what I can check so that I don't have to keep
booting from the DVD?
