$146.95 for WinXP Pro w/SP2

$322.95 for MS Office, Standard Edition

Total: $469.90
Of course, you can buy "starter" editions of each one and spend less, but
they'll be so crippled you'll hate them within days. You won't be able to
return them, though. OEM editions are non-refundable and in fact are
intended for "system builders." Once installed on a machine, they may not
be transferred to another.
Good luck.
Now, if you want to set up a server that will serve up to five (5) clients
at a time, you'll have to come up with $687.95.

But don't open the package unless you really, really want it. If you open
the package or tamper with it in any way, you can't return it. If you
realize you ordered the wrong thing, you have 30 days to return it for
refund.
Good luck.
Of course, you could use open source software. Then you would have no
artificial restrictions on the number of clients you could serve or the
number of computers you could install it on. Here's what this option
will cost you: $0.00.
No official support with the free option, though. If you want that,
you'll have to pay for it. I've never actually done that, but you can if
you need it. Pricing for Suse or Redhat support is comparable to
Microsoft pricing for the software alone, I believe.
If you don't need the support, though, everything is free, as in free
beer. Plus you get the source, so if you have the know-how you can tailor
it any way you like. For many, that's the coolest part.
