On Tuesday 16 August 2005 21:39, bison@ecol.spam stood up and spoke the
following words to the masses...:

Mandriva is not the best possible distribution on the block, but it's a
fairly good one. It's far from being crap.

Because the vendor of the WiFi card supplies you with proprietary
drivers and a program to install them with. Contact the manufacturer
of your WiFi card and ask them to supply drivers for the Linux kernel.
Open Source, if possible. Let me guess what their answer would be...

It is not. But then again, Gnu/Linux does not really have the same
hardware vendor support as Microsoft Windows does, or does it?

You *do* know the meaning of the word /beta,/ don't you?

Oh my God! Manually? Are you allright? Should we call for a doctor?
<grin>

An error message has a meaning. Look at what it's saying and deal with
it. Even if it means that you'd have to run a Google search, God
forbid that it should happen to you... <sarcasm intended>

Blame nVidia then. They're the ones who supplied the X.Org developers
with those drivers.
> The cpufreq module would for some reason not work on init.
Mandriva unjustly adds "acpi=ht" to the kernel's /append/ line in your
bootloader. Change this to "acpi=on" in order for CPU frequency
scaling to work.

There is plenty of support, especially for purchased distributions. You
typically also find much better support here than you would if you
contact Microsoft. Trust me, I know...
As for the nightmare, I consider Microsoft Windows, its Registry and its
entire licensing policy a far greater nightmare.

Read all the documentation, do Google searches, ask on newsgroups, and
if you paid for your copy of LE 2005, contact Mandriva - you are
entitled to.
I'm afraid your vision is severely clouded, and you are simply expecting
Gnu/Linux to be an alternative for Windows. Well, it is *not* and
never was intended as such. This is UNIX. Live with it or go back to
spending lots of money on the crashing software from somewhere in
Redmond.
