I had a similar problem with ext3, but not nearly as bad. For some reason,
my Suse 9.1 Pro would fail the fsck of my root drive at boot. I did not
take the time to troubleshoot why but here is what I did to fix it.

Booted using the "rescue" option of your installation dvd/cd. Actually,
you can use any linux boot media (e.g. a live cd or tom's boot disk) as
long as the drive you need to fsck is not mounted.

I then ran e2fsck(e.g. e2fsck /dev/hda6) on the bad partition.

e2fsck fixed the errors this time and I was able to boot properly.
