Ok that would probably explain why I couldn't get linux to connect to
the cable modem. Although I have since put things back as they were.

Set the ip to 192.168.1.10
set the gateway
connected the pc to router (and connected the router to cable modem)

which puts me back to square 1. no lan access via suse 9.3
i'm going to attach a few files .. nothing has changed at least that I
know of. but maybe someone can see something.
