Ok, so the 'primary OS must be hda' is just a habit. I can understand
that. It just seems like extra work.

For example, when I want to upgrade, I install over my next-to-last OS
(wherever it's located) and, after testing and verification (plus
copying any necessary stuff from the last OS) I can use the last OS'
disk for whatever. Normally, I keep it around, 'just in case', so I
always have two different bootable OSes . . .
