The rest of what you say is what I was trying to say, but I use German and
UK keyboards, so wasn't sure how the American dead-key layout worked ;-)
However the above bit is wrong, you do not need to have a dutch keyboard to
use the dutch layout, it is only helpful to do so, I often switch between
English and German on the fly (especially if programming, the English, like
the American, layout has the often used {[]} keys in a useful place, where
as they are a pain on the German layout.
To Linux (and Windows for that matter) it is totally irrelevant what
keyboard you have connected (language wise, if you select one with
multi-media keys, then they need to know about them). Personally I'd like a
keyboard with all blank key tops so that I don't have to worry about
switching layouts and occassionally confusing myself by looking at the
keyboard and the key presses not echoing what is on the keycaps, but it is
something I can live with ;-)
