You will never hear me *recommend* an upgrade in place, simply because
it has failed for me in the past and the time required to fix things
that broke was far longer than would be needed to install clean and
redo all my non-SUSE programs.
Just backup all your data, as I mentioned before, and save your drivers
and such. I wouldn't worry about things like xine and the codecs, they
are easily redone from the Packman site.

Possibly, but *I* still don't recommend it -- others may and your
experience could be good or bad, or anything in between. Just remember
it's your choice. Besides, a clean install clears out all the garbage
and any lingering 'mistakes' you may have. I'm constantly seeing people
that have upgraded and one or two things don't work; then, after a few
days or more of troubleshooting, they reinstall clean and everything
then works.
This is also not limited to Linux -- I had very similar experiences
with Windows where a clean install was always better than an upgrade.
And remember that the three most important things to do before an
upgrade or a clean install are:
1. backup
2. backup
3. backup
;-)
