Strange DVD behavior?

I'm using SUSE 10.0 - really like it!

Several times, I've had the DVD player/burner "lock up" with no way to
get the dvd out.

Last night, I had the install disk in the player. I tried to look at it in
a file manager and the cd/dvd software popped up. From then on, I couldn't
get the dvd out. I couldn't close the software. I couldn't restart the
computer, I couldn't turn the computer off.

I had to turn the power off to the computer to get out of this situation.

I assume there is a better way to resolve this.
