First of all just so you know, writing to an NTFS partition is not
recommended because you can hose your Windows. Linux can write to FAT32
just fine. For the future, if you want to share data between the two
operating systems make a small FAT32 partition.
Now, are you saying that you logged into Windows and the directories you
moved from Linux are missing? And they don't show up in Linux either?
If this is correct, do nothing further on the machine. The data can
probably be recovered with specialized data recovery software. I use
Easy Recovery Pro, but it is quite expensive. If you don't have
something like this - and I don't know your skill level - you will be
best off taking the laptop to a professional computer repair shop. Do
not take the laptop to your local version of BigStoreUSA. Call around
and make sure the shop you choose has the necessary data recovery
software and some experience in doing this type of work.
If all else fails locally, then your data can definitely be recovered by
a professional data recovery firm. That option is quite expensive, but
only you can determine the value of the data. I highly recommend
DriveSavers (www.drivesavers.com), but since I don't know where you
live you may want to Google (on a different machine!) for professional
data recovery firms in your country.
Good luck,
Malke
