Same problem here on a Dell Inspiron 4100 with a 2200 abg card I added.
But there is no ACPI on this particular laptop. In fact, ACPI breaks
things so I turn it off and use APM. I've done a few things to try to
get the interface up at boot including editing the /etc/sysconfig/network
stanzas directly but no matter what, the wifi interface will not come up
reliably.

One of the things I have noted with some regularity is that the laptop
seems to have a firmware reset at boot time and the firmware for the 2200
abg card resets itself so I don't get a IP address but I do get a eth1
interface up correctly. The file that fires up the wifi connection has
all the correct bits and bytes in it and if I do it manually after either
booting or after suspending it works by doing:

iwconfig eth1 essid xxxxx key yyyyyyyyy
dhcpcd eth1

Today I launched yast because suddenly on last boot all the settings in
teh existing /etc/sysconfig/network file for the wlan were all gone and I
associated with a open AP here in the neighborhood that my neighbor owns
instead of my WEP enabled WRT. I filled in all the settings yet again
and this time did a /etc/init.d/network restart and the whole thing came
up right with an IP address granted that was right.

I think personally that the 2200 abg card does not "settle" right at boot
and so the firmware errors out or something. AFter it settles, I can get
network access manually using iwconfig statements.

We'll see when I reboot my Inspiron later tonite when I test out the
changes I made :)
