Display Problems

i have just installed a fresh copy of SUSE 10.0 on an old 10 gig hdd.
the logon screen, aswell as the installer displayed perfectly, however, once
the OS has loaded it is obvious that there is some issue with the video
card, as everything on the screen is barely ledgeble.
its not the monitor, as i tried an old one lying around which gave the same
result.
from what ive read of other postings the nvidia-geforce-fx6600-gt card i
have should be more than compatible?
should i give up on old suse, or is there someway i can fix the problem?
