André:
I have done several updates of Linux (red Hat & SUSE)... including the one
you are ready to make.
My experience is mixed... and often pretty bad!
In the worst cases I had to do a complete reinstall, to get a good stable
Linux.
In many cases I had to manually hack a lot to get everything running again!
A few advises:
1) Hopefully you already have a separate partition to mount /boot
and/or /usr /home. If not it would be wise to backup everything of value
(DVD backup are great using DAR).
2) Do an upgrade... hope for the best, but be ready for the worst: loss of
data. Backup all your /etc directory, and probably home ( pieces
like .bashrc, etc...)
If everything goes smothly, then great!
If not reinstall SUSE from scratch. I am strongly biased toward the XFS file
system for rationale reasons (too long to writee here)... Excepted for the
small partition used to mount /boot (a few hundred MB) rather use
ext2/ext3.
If you know linux well, fixing wrinkles left by the upgrade will be real
work, but not difficult.
If you don't Linux automatic installer do a great install job... and a
mediocre upgrade job. Just a fact of life!
-----------
Problem with updates:
1) Hardware detection: Neither SUSE nor Fedora give access to the "fancy"
hardware detection software used by the installer. So upgrades are so/so.
2) The RPM based systems (Like SUSE/Fedora/Mandriva... more) have some great
advantages... excepted when it comes to O/S upgrades, and dependencies.
So you may expect major upgrades to be rough for a long time, a good reason
to have a separate partition which is never overwritten, never touched
when running upgrades software.
-----------
Hope this helped.
