Re: Where are the SuSE 9.2 Professional CD ISOs?

If you'd have done a little Google-ing you would have found out that Suse never offered 9.2 CD ISO images. They offered a DVD ISO image, and an ftp installation option, as alternatives to buying a boxed set. Any ISO images of the 9.2 CDs have been offered by an individual, as a bittorrent.

My friend, Gary, gave to me 5 CDs burned from ISOs which he downloaded from Novell, not via BitTorrent, last spring before I was using a cable modem for internet access at my home. I will call him tomorrow specifically to question and verify his source. My first attempt at restoring the two bad discs in my set was a phone call to him. Unfortunately, the two discs he gave to me were his "master" home-burned CDs, not backups, so he was unable to help me.

As 9.2 is an older version, the torrents available are likely to be inoperable, or very slow, as most people would choose to use their bandwidth to obtain a more up to date version.

This is why I am not particularly interested in pursuing BitTorrent as a means of restoring these discs. I'd rather cut my teeth on BitTorrent in pursuit of something far juicier. :)

As others have pointed out, you can d/l the 9.2 DVD ISO image from an
official Suse mirror, (one has been suggested, there are many others) far quicker than you can obtain the CD images from the available torrents, even if they are still working. You won't even have to change disks during any new installations, and you only need to keep track of, and protect, a single disk. If you do damage it, you can d/l it again, as many times as you want.

I am new to SuSE and new to YaST. I would have preferred to receive SuSE 9.2 Pro on DVD instead of 5 CDs in the first place but he didn't have enough storage space available to dl the entire ISO for that at the time or I don't believe I had acquired my DVD-drive at the time - one or both.

The only thing which confuses me about installing from the DVD instead of the 5CD set he gave me is how to get YaST to request that I insert the DVD instead of 'CD 2' or 'CD 4' whenever I need to add something to my system which isn't already there?

Do something.

I came here, didn't I?

Upgrade,

Not to 10.0. I have already Googled to see what problems others have encountered by attempting to upgrade from 9.2 to 10.0 and there seem to be some headaches I'd do well to avoid right now because right now I have neither time nor desire to muck up my system which right now works very well. I have avoiding "upgrading" to ".0" versions of Linux since the time I first installed Red Hat 6.0 in February 2000. Doing that is like buying a '68 Corvette with all the irritations associated with owning an untested, new body style.

or d/l the 9.2 DVD image,

I think I will.

but quit whining like a 5 year old, because things aren't "exactly" as you want them to be. Grow up!!

Hey, the only thing I've whined about is the fact that it seems almost impossible to get a straight, simple answer to a straight, simple question in here. There is no reason why I should have to explain that my mother lives out in BFE which makes FTP installs practically impossible since she only has a 56K modem whenever a replacement of my 2 bad discs would solve the problem. That *is* why I chose the subject line for this thread when I created it. That is, IMO, a very reasonable request.

This is the best the internet has to offer, take it or leave it.

Your response, kind person, (aside from all comments regarding my whining) is exactly the kind of response I *expected* to receive from a newsgroup such as this.

Thank you very much.
