Re: Where are the SuSE 9.2 Professional CD ISOs?

Yes, but while we were off chasing rabbits I thought I would upgrade my installation of Python too. Seems only reasonable. Ya?

Actually, a particular version of Suse is pretty tightly tied to specific versions of packages. Because of dependencies among packages, it's often not practical to upgrade package versions in a particular version of Suse. That's what new versions of Suse are for.

I've read that this is not the case for Debian Linux though - which
speaks volumes to me. Aside from unsupported hardware issues the most
irritating thing about Linux to me is how I always seem to spend more
time keeping the OS current than enjoying it.

What's so bad about keeping the grin visible on susewatcher's chameleon
face for say a whole year before bothering to reinstall?

"If it works, don't fix it" is good advice.

Red Hat 7.2 + Ximian Gnome served me very well for 2 1/2 years. I completely ignored Red Hat 8 and 9 with no regrets. Finally when I decided to go with Red Hat 10 they dropped the ball, went enterprise-only and tried to pacify me with Fedora Core 1. I burned my Red Hat and went elsewhere instead. I have no use for a company that does something like that to its customers. Mandrake didn't live up to the hype that made me interested in giving it a try. SuSE rocks. I'm also glad that Novell has acquired it because Ximian Gnome was the only thing that made Red Hat rock on my desktop back in the day. Just so long as Novell doesn't follow in Red Hat's footsteps, I'll promote their cause.

Nevertheless, at some point you might start coveting more recent software packages. This will at first nudge you and then force you to
upgrade your Suse.

Of course this will eventually happen. The most important thing to me right now that still doesn't work on my SuSE 9.2 Pro system is my Linksys WMP54G wireless NIC. If upgrading t SuSE 10.0 would make it work without a bunch of hassle, I'd start preparing to upgrade again tonight.

Additionally, it's a misunderstanding to think that 9.2 is more mature than 10.0. The mantissa does not indicate maturity.

That's not what I'm thinking. Upgrading from 9.2 to 10.0 without doing a fresh install creates headaches I don't need according to what I've read in Usenet. I'm not ready yet to do a fresh install on my sole PC at home which I actually *use* productively on a daily basis. When I get to that point I will. The headaches of always having to freshly install for best results really makes Debian look better to me but I'm not ready to look into that distro just yet either. When I get a 2nd PC to play around with, maybe, but not until.

In fact my impression is that 10.0 is widely held to be superior to
both 9.2 and 9.3.

And just what makes it so superior? Anything that's important to me in particular? Because, if not, I can afford to wait.

9.2 Pro cannot recognize my Linksys WMP54G wireless NIC which I've already purchased. Big letdown there.

9.2 Pro cannot successfully setup my machine to dual-boot with my WinXP drive on my SATA bus and my SuSE drive on my parallel bus - thus forcing me to have to install each OS completely separately on each drive and manually change my BIOS setting to select which drive I want to boot from. Not a problem there but it would be nice if things worked as intended.
