See a post about this in alt.linux by Walter Mitty. He had the same problem,
I don't recall exactly what he did, but he said it helped a lot. Its under
the message "Considering switch to Linux"
It seems to click with a post I remember, on this, involving getting true
type fonts and changing the anti-aliasing option in xorg.conf. He had a way
to actually install windows true type fonts into X.
Good luck. I'd quote his post, but I think that is frowned on in most
newsgroups.
