can not boot after kernel update

Suse 9.3

when I do the update from the suse server or mirrors, I get the
invitation to upgrade the kernel as well.
This is causing problems, since the suse 9.3 refuses to boot after
such update.
I am booting the 9.3 with LILO, so it has to do something with the
kernel and lilo config.

How to proceed correctyl? After updateting the kernel from the update
server, should I do something with the lilo before I reboot the
system?
On the next reboot, only wir charcters come up the screen and I have
to install all new again. This can not be the way.
