usb modem under linux how?

I have given up trying to get my internal modem of the toshiba laptop
work under linux.

I have bought a 56k external modem, but tehy come in the usb variatey
those days, real serial once seem not to be avaiable any more.

However I tried to install or to connect to the modem, it seems not
working at all with linux, while it works fine under win.

is there any special trick how to connect to internet with a laptop
when underway?
