The internal modem is almost certainly a Winmodem, designed to work with Windows only. The manufacturers of these things don't release details of how to write drivers so usually it's impossible to get them to work with Linux. Having said that, some intrepid souls do write drivers for Linux and a Google of "Linux modem driver" plus the model's name and number might turn something up.
I've recently got a USB modem working under Linux (although of the ADSL variety ). It required a bit of work, mainly on Google (again! ) to find the appropriate instructions. You could also try the manufacturer's website - they sometimes have info, drivers etc.
It would help if you could post the manufacturer and model of the modem.
Cheers .
