Nvidia comment

Hi everyone and Happy New Year :~)
I was just reading comments on this newsgroup and thought I'd add a comment
regarding a recurrent problem/hassle for some users with Nvidia cards. The
day before yesterday I updated my WINE rpm to the newest version (0.94) and
added some new fonts I got from a link at the Scribus web site (Gentium
fonts) using the Control Center. Also updated Gimp to 2.3.6 and added some
plugins (Shadow recovery and particle deposition) from source. Just a
typical day. I then used the Gentium fonts in a page layout in Scribus and
saved the document in PDF format with a layer effect. This worked as I
would expect. Also, the Gimp plugins I mentioned worked as well. Gimp
rocks & with 347 plugins it really rocks !!! So I thought everything was
just fine...
Then I shut down for the day. Yesterday I rebooted and I wasn't paying
particular attention to the bootup process. I did not boot in to the usual
runlevel 5 with graphical login however. When I tried 'startx' I got a
warning....I forget exactly what it said. Being an experienced user I did
not really worry about it as I can pretty much recover from just about
anything nowadays !! So I rebooted and played close attention. I saw that
the Nvidia splash screen did not appear (as I suspected) and knew this was
the problem. So I changed to runlevel 3 and ran Yast online update to
reinstall the Nvidia driver. Yast said that the driver was already
installed. I rebooted and same thing happened. In fact I did that 3 or 4
times to no avail. So I decided to run Sax2 and just use the somewhat
usable xorg driver/settings to allow me to log onto my kdesktop and use
konqueror to browse the SuSE Nvidia How-To for anything that I might have
forgotten. I noticed that the How-To says to run Sax2 from a console using
the ' sax2 -m 0=nvidia ' command and so I did that. This apparently is
what I needed to do to get the driver working properly !!! I never did
that before so I will remember that next time the Nvidia driver fails to
load at startup.
Now I am just wondering WHY this situation happens occasionaly in the first
place ??? I don't understand why a stable installation should change the
graphics card/driver setup unless either a kernel upgrade or graphics
driver or something else to do with the graphics subsystem (xorg.conf) took
place. I know that we see this happen fairly frequently in this newsgroup
so it is something that is not arbitrary.
I love SuSE and I have been using it for about 5 years now. I have learned
so much from reading nearly every post to this newsgroup and I try to help
others whenever I have confidence that I have helpful input. Of course we
all know about proprietary drivers and private companies working with, or
lack thereof, the FOSS community. I am NOT putting down Nvidia here or
complaining about SuSE !!! I respect Nvidia and I think they produce high
quality products. Of course it would be preferable for them to provide
open source drivers but I am not going to hold my breath. I just wish
there product would behave nicely with my OS of choice....
P.S. I hope that the Tech Source's free-software-friendly graphics products
become a reality. A product designed specifically for FOSS such as there
graphics card would be most welcome !!
Just my ramblings for the start of this new year...
And again, I wish everybody a happy and healthy new year !!
:~)
