I couldn't boot into graphical mode in SuSE Linux 9.3 x86_64 with nvidia
after a kernel upgrade, either.
Yes, the installer insists that the driver is installed. You have to
recompile the module again.
It is called something.run and is saved under /usr/share/doc/nvidia. Sorry,
but I don't remember the actual name. Execute it with ./(name of package) as
root, , ask it to reinstall the driver, and it will be ok. Worked for me.
If it is not under /usr/share/doc/nvidia, then rerun the Yast update, and
ask it not to remove the packages after the update.
By the way, the nVidia card is brand new, by Albatron, the 6600 256 model. I
bought it after unsuccessfully and repeatedly trying to install the 3d
proprietary ATI driver for my 9600 radeon card. NOOOO success to that!!! the
installer:
- kept asking me questions I thought I shouldn't have to answer (most users
dont't want to, anyway),
- wanted to install a new xorg.conf file (why? nvidia never had to to that
and no problems occured whatsoever in their installations),
- messed up the font sizes and, in the end,
- didn't install any 3d support!!! Thank god for backups!!
Somebody should tell the ATI people to correct (?) the driver installation
procedures. It is a shame to lose customers like that!!
