Normal users *used* to start at 500, but 1000 is now becoming the norm.
You can pick any number you want above 1000 as long as it's not in
use. ;-)

I haven't done Samba in so long, that I've forgotten a lot of the
tricks and tweaks, but it looked reasonable to me (someone else may
chime in if it's not right).

The way I handle a 'public' directory is to have a separate partition
for it, then mount it at /home/public and symlink it to /pub. Then, I
export it via NFS so all machines access that partition via /pub --
keeps the strain on my one remaining brain cell to a minimum no
matter what box I'm on! :-) I set it up with 775 permissions
(root:users as owner and group) so all members of 'users' group can
access it, with some sub-directories having more, or less, permissions
(and possibly different user/group) as appropriate . . .
