Linux support for Tulip is usually very good.
I suggest that you use the configuration tool called YAST2 (in the KDE menu
appears under the name of "Control Center".

YAST is a mostly GUI configuration tool, ( SUSE "Control Panel" in MS
parlance), and detecting your Tulip chip and installing the drivers should
be a breeze...

During the SUSE install you probably enter the wrong options, else the TULIP
driver would have been installed.
