If the ADSL modem is the DHCP server, then it must already be on the network
and have a valid internal IP Address. In this case just configure it's DHCP
server to pass out the default gateway parameter to the clients. The
gateway address will be the ADSL's private network interface IP Address.
My home network example: Ip addresses changed to protect the innocent 8)
/24 indicates subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
Switch is an 8 port Gigiabyte 100/10MB
ADSL Modem - DLink DSL302G, 192.168.0.1/24
DHCP service on modem to pass out following scope options:
Range 192.168.0.100-254
Mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS 192.168.0.10

DLink Wireless Access Point 192.168.0.2 (forwards DHCP requests to
192.168.0.1)

Server:
(crappy old Celeron 500) - Linux SuseLinuxEnterprise9.x with Bind DNS
service, Mail services (IMAP, SMTP), File/print share etc.
Fixed Address 192.168.0.10/24 (don't want it changing on me), Default
gateway 192.168.0.1, DNS1 127.0.0.1 (its own DNS service forwards lookups
for external domains to my ISP's DNS)

Clients:
2 Workstations-wired, 1 laptop-wireless, Chipped Xbox, Various OS's, address
via DHCP,

All protected by client firewalls, and all have access to the internet.
Works fine for me.
