I had this problem with the version of Amarok that came with the SUSE 10
DVD, but upgrading to the version from Packman solved the problem for me.

Kaffeine and other applications which used sound were not affected by this
problem - i.e. they didn't reset the volume when changing tracks.

Under settings, what do you have set for Audio-Ausgabe (Audio playback?), I
think mine was originally Helix, but I changed it to xine (one of the many
supplementary updates somehow killed off Helix).

Never had problems with Kmix, it was Amarok and/or Helix that caused my
problems.

You could try one of the other mixers, I think there are around half a dozen
in the multimedia menu...
