Indeed, you're Windows specific hardware DOES indeed
work well Windows.

It comes with about 13.5 so-called CD/Multimedia players, most of which
don't work and either crash or play with distorted sound.

I have no such problems, and MOST do not. However, it is well
understood that there are hardware vendors that either haven't
shared enough information about their implementations or they
have chosen to try to provide a closed source solution, and
it isn't very good. A bit of research goes a long way
with Linux.

With that said, more and more hardware vendors are producing
or helping to produce Linux drivers.. .which certainly
shows the momentum that Linux has.

If you want to re-burn everything as .ogg it amarok sort of works.
RealPlayer will play mp3 but the ui is hopeless.

I don't like RealPlayer either. It gets in the way too often.
I use Kaffeine as my all-in-all everything player.... including
mp3's.

Linux is still locked into Nerdland and will not make any impression on
the wider market.

There's certainly a bit of truth to this... however, Linux is
continuing to grow.... and it's growth is (obviously) extending
outide the "nerdland" market.
