Re: Another Linux Myth Exposed - Hopeless at playing music ..

It comes with about 13.5 so-called CD/Multimedia players, most of which
don't work and either crash or play with distorted sound.

I usually use Amarok for MP3's and CD's, Kaffeine or MPlayer for videos and
DVD's and I also have xmms, but I hardly use it. I find these tools better
than the ones I use under Windows for the most part... Musicmatch isn't bad
and probably rates as high as Amarok on my scales, although its penchant
for running around the Internet to find albums like those you are listening
too at the slightest mis-click is annoying.

Kaffeine doesn't suffer from the synch problems that Nero Showtime does when
watching videos - by the end of a 45 minute program, Showtime can be as
much as 3 seconds out on the lip-synch! PowerDVD allegedly does better, so
I'll have to dig through my pile of Windows support CD's and find a copy
somewhere...

If you want to re-burn everything as .ogg it amarok sort of works.
RealPlayer will play mp3 but the ui is hopeless.

Most of my stuff is MP3, I ripped the majority of my 300 CD's before I got
into Linux, and don't want to go through re-ripping everything into .ogg,
so I'll stick with Amarok and MP3 for now.

I hate RealPlayer, it is probably the closest thing I've seen to spyware on
Linux, it tries to phone home whenever it is run...

Linux is still locked into Nerdland and will not make any impression on
the wider market.

A couple of years ago I would have agreed, but my ludite mother has taken to
it like a duck to water... (see reply to Chris Cox)
