I booted my computer this morning and the X server wouldn't start. (I'm

An error message which may be relevant, is:
(WW) RADEON: No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1)
found.
No, that's not relevant. How did I solve it?
Since the "John Smith" account was functioning
(john) and the other unprivileged accounts were not, I
thought I'd log in as root and bring john and timmy up
in separate viewers to compare the hidden files in
them. And what did I find? In the john account,
..fonts.cache-1 had a full list of fonts, while the
corresponding file in timmy had a bunch of crap in it.
Gently I right clicked that file and clicked "delete."
Then I copied the corresponding John Smith file to
timmy. And reset the X-server!
It would be a good idea to keep .fonts.cache-1 out of
harm's way, so I copied it to another directory outside
any conceivable search path. Refreshing this file once
every two weeks, should it happen again, is not too
much effort.
