Re: Replacing hard drive

In a recent thread I asked about my unstable 10.0 install and all responses
pointed to hardware. I've checked as much as I can and have now decided to
change the hard drive.

Current setup, twin drives boot using Grub.
hda Windows XP
hdb Suse 10

Is it just a case of swapping hdb and re installing from the dvd? Will it
recognise the XP installation and will it ensure that I can still boot XP,
I ask because with the current hdb unplugged the PC will not boot to XP (I
assume the original install modified hda). Or do I have to do something
grub/boot related prior to removing the old disc.

There are several ways on how to do this, depending on how broken your
old HD is and if you have enough place in your PC. Below hdc, could also
be hdd or hdh or hdX

Method one. Place the new HD on hdc
Method two. Place the new HD on hdb and the old on hdc
Method three. Place the new HD on hdb and trow the old one away.

In each case you can just do a new installation. The installation should
recognize the Windows partition. If Linux is still bootable, you can
first put grub with YaST on a floopy, so that you can boot via floppy.

If the HD is still accesible, wetehr you do a new installation, or just
move the data depends on your experience. The easiest is to do a new
installation. If the old HD is still accesible, you can easily copy your
data from one to the other.

If you want to remove the old HD and it has been recognized during
installation, place a # in front of the line with hdX in
/boot/grub/menu.lst, because otherwise the machine won't be able to boot
in Linux.
