How can I set a network card to active....

Hi!
I have SuSe 10 on my laptop which has a built in network card which is
not configured. I have also a Netgeat MA521 PCMCIA wireless card which
i have finally got 'working'.
I say 'working' because i have got the link light on the card to light
up, meaning (i think) that the card and Linux sees the existence of my
wireless router (Netgear MR814) but i can't actually get out on the
internet and the router does not see the PC Card as attached.
Upon further investigation i HTTP server set up and noticed my PC Card
is not listed under interfaces so that led me to assume it is not the
active connection, maybe my onboard card is? If i plug a cable in
there all works well!
So, my question is, how can i set my Netgear card to active? I plan to
use the computer in a different room to my router so a wired
connection is not an option.
Thanks for any tips in advance!
Engelkott
