Hei Reinhard, thank you for stepping in.
To create a Xorg configuration from scratch you should issue one of the
following commands as user "root" in text-only-mode (run-/initlevel 3):
"sax2 -m 0=vesa -V 0:1024x768@60" (for the "vesa"-driver)
That worked OK and I was able to start X and KDE. However, my LCD screen 's native resolution is 1280x1024 so it didn't look good at all. I was able to start Yast and Sax. While trying to set some better resolution screen would go into power saving mode, sometimes it would display "out of range" message. Eventually i managed to freeze it hard and X wouldn't start anymore. I wasn't able to start sax anymore from GUI.
Starting from a command you gave me, I figured out that:
sax2 -m 0=via -V 0:1280x1024@60
gives me pretty good screen. I have xdm and KDE working just fine.
Right now I am writing this on that "recovered" machine, logged remotely to my primary computer where I have Thunderbird already set.
From my point of view this problem is hardware-related. Thus changing
the system at a GUI level might be waste of time ...
Well, I had SUSE 10.0 installed from the same set of discs, until a week ago, without any tweaking. I had few other distros installed during the week, all worked just fine. Right now I can launch Knoppix and SLAX just fine.
Here is the output of commands you listed before:

As I said, I have correct resolution now. However the screen is shifted to one side and up, windows are kind of too big, they "escape" behind the upper edge of my lcd screen.
I think I need a break from the computer, it's saturday night after all. Will return to tweaking it tomorrow. If you have any idea how to improve from here, I will really appreciate. Like this: :))))
Thank you very much anyway, you have helped me a lot already!!
