i am having problems getting an ip

Is that an ethernet modem with internal PPPoE or PPPoA?

all i know its a motorola i need to find out,

That does not mean anything, unfortunatly.

i install suse 10.0 on a laptop for someone and they can't get on the web
so i am trying to help them with the issue.

And we try to help you. ;-)

so funny thing is the modem is conected directly to the laptop

How? By USB? By ethX? By ...

you still have to configure the etho card?

That depends on the modem.

also, when they do that are they using dsl/adsl configuration or just the
card?

No. Well, it depends. I have seen modems that need an external PPPoE or
PPPoA steered from the machine it is connected to. Most modems now have
their owm PPPoE and/or PPPoA.

hope i can solve this for them there windows was messed up so am i am
trying to convert them to suse linux :-)

We will help as soon as you can give the relevamt information, e.g. a
link to the page of the make and model.

This is how I configure my ADSL connection.
My machines used DHCP. So installation does everything for me. I then
surf to http://192.168.123.254 where I log in on the modem/router. There
I fill out the login, pasword and other information my provider
requires.

As this is completely OS independent, it does not matter if I do that
with Linux, Unix, BSD, OS-2, HP-UX, MacOS, OSX, Minix, Solaris, OS-400,
QNX, GEOS, Hurd, Irix, PalmOS, CP/M, Multics, Plan 9, ...
