I am using SuSe 10.0 with a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. My concern is
regarding the screen. It dims incessantly, as if it were powering down,
and the only way to get it back is to keep pressing the closed lid
button. It will usually go right back to fully dimmed, buttonpress after
buttonpress, and after about five minutes of this sort of frustrating
playing around it eventually settles down and remains at the correct
illumination. I am guessing it is in the power management systems, but
for the life of me I am at a loss to find it. The system is always
plugged in. I have been playing around trying to find it for about a
month, and if anything I have noticed it seems worse than when I
originally installed the system.
Another hint is the fact it appears before Grub has even
managed to load, so this seems to be something pretty low level. I am
embarrassed to say I have yet to manage to call up the actual system
bios. Are laptops different than desktops in this regard? All I have
managed is to call up boot source options.
I am relatively new to Linux, and entirely new to SusSe, so any direction
would be greatly appreciated. Google has not been of any help.
Thank you in advance,
Michael.
Michael,
I have run many different distros on the two laptops that I have owned. I
have never had a problem like this. Unless somebody chimes in here with
an idea, I would say it's something weird with the laptop?

If this is occuring even before GRUB is fully loaded, I have to think
looking into the BIOS settings is the first thing you should be doing.
Does this machine dual-boot into Window$ as well? If so, does the problem
occur there too?
You could also try and boot a Live CD such as Knoppix or Kanotix and see if
the problem can be isolated further..
Never saw this one before, but these I the first things I would try to
identify the source of the issue..
