This might seem like a really dumb question, but I was to install the
latest version of OpenSSH on my SUSE Linux server.
I have downloaded the latest file "openssh-4.3p2.tar.gz" and I have the
install notes.
It says to install defaults do the following;
./configure
make
make install
I'm new to this, and this means nothing to me, how do I get from my .tar
file to this?
Idiots guide please!

o.k. You're a newbie. Let's do this the easy way. Open up Konqueror.
Browse to the directory where the file (openssh-4.3p2.tar.gz). Right click
on the file. From the menu that appears select '->Extract ->Extract Here'
Now a new folder will appear. Click on this new folder to enter it. On the
top right hand corner of Konqueror click the 'Window' icon. From the drop
down menu click 'Show Terminal Emulator'. Left click in the terminal
emulator window that appears. That brings the mouse focus to this window.
Now type ./configure and hit Enter. This will configure the app for your
system. When that finishes type make and hit Enter. When that finishes
type sudo and hit Enter. At the password prompt type your ROOT password.
Now type 'make install' and hit Enter. When that's done type ldconfig and
hit Enter. When that finishes type exit and hit Enter. That's it !!!
P.S. Why not just install the rpm from OpenSuSE ?? Just use Yast.
