When I run partimage under a root shell, the ncurses display is
corrupted, if I run it in as root in Konsole, it is displayed

pressing <Ctrl> <Alt> <F1>. The same problem does not occur with mc.
The corruption looks like either tabs or spaces are not being
interpreted correctly, so some display lines are different lengths to
others. There is the occasional '?' as well, which I take to mean a
character cannot be interpreted.
I suspect that this has something to do with the environment settings,
but which one/s. I've had a play with LC_ALL, with no success. Is
this a UTF8 problem?
As a bit of background, partimage uses the newt library to create it's
ncurses display.
Any help appreciated.
I have no problem here.
'locale' gives:
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"
